Is reselling Pokémon cards legal in the UK?
Reselling Pokémon cards is legal in the UK. You own what you buy, and no UK law caps the price you can ask for a sealed box or a single card. Shops can still cancel your orders and close your account, and your profit counts as income for tax. That is the full picture, and the rest of this guide shows where each part applies.
This is general information, not legal advice. Last reviewed 29 October 2026.
Why it is legal
Once a genuine product is on the UK market, its owner can resell it without the brand's permission. The UK also has no general price-gouging law for goods. A seller can list an Elite Trainer Box at £90 when the RRP is £49.99, and a buyer can decline. Our guide to whether reselling is legal in the UK covers the principle for all products.
What shops can do instead
Shop limits are contract terms, not criminal law. Pokémon Center UK states that it may limit orders per order, per account, per person or per household, and that it may cancel any order. Other retailers apply the same kind of limit at the till or in the basket.
If you break a limit, the shop can:
- cancel the order, including after it has taken payment
- close your account
- refuse future orders to your address or card
It cannot have you prosecuted for reselling what you bought. See Pokémon order cancelled for the refund steps, and how resellers get limited stock for what the limits mean in practice.
Are Pokémon bots legal?
For cards, a bot breaks retailer terms but does not break a UK criminal law. The risk is cancelled orders and banned accounts. Ticket bots are different, because the Breach of Ticket Purchase Limits Regulations 2018 make them a criminal offence. Read Pokémon bots in the UK before you try one.
The Pokémon Company and scalping
The Pokémon Company has taken anti-scalping steps in Japan in 2026. Hypebeast reports facial-recognition checks at five temporary Pokémon Card Stores in Japan from 31 July to 16 August, with one entry and one queue ticket per person per day.
Those rules apply in Japan. We have not seen the same measures announced for the UK. What UK buyers do see is retailer limits, queues at Pokémon Center UK and cancelled orders.
When Pokémon reselling becomes taxable
Buying sealed product to sell on at a profit is trading. HMRC's trading allowance covers the first £1,000 of gross trading income in a tax year. Above that, you register for Self Assessment and pay tax on the profit after costs. Selling your own childhood collection is different, because that is disposing of personal possessions.
Platforms such as eBay and Vinted report seller data to HMRC. The full rules, with the dates, are in do you pay tax on reselling in the UK and Vinted tax.
Fake cards are the real legal risk
Selling counterfeit goods is an offence under the Trade Marks Act 1994, and not knowing is a weak defence when the signs were there. Singles bought from private sellers carry the most risk. Learn how to spot fake Pokémon cards before you buy from anyone who is not a retailer.
The ethics question
Buying a whole shelf stops other collectors from buying at RRP, and that is why shops set limits. Resellers who stay inside the limit, buy one allowance and sell at a fair price stay clear of the worst of the criticism. Whether that is worth your time is a separate question, and is Pokémon reselling worth it works through the maths after fees.
Common questions
Is it illegal to resell Pokémon cards in the UK?
No. Reselling cards is legal. Counterfeits, ticket bots and unpaid tax are the areas with legal consequences.
Is Pokémon scalping illegal in the UK?
No UK law bans selling cards above RRP. Shops can cancel orders that break their limits.
Can Pokémon Center UK ban me for reselling?
It can close your account or cancel orders under its terms. That is a contract matter, not a criminal one.
Do I pay tax on selling Pokémon cards?
You pay tax if you are trading and your gross income passes £1,000 in a tax year. Selling a personal collection is not trading.
Has the Pokémon Company banned resellers?
Not in the UK, as far as we have seen. The steps reported in 2026 apply to Japanese stores and Japanese online sales.
